According to previous research, homosexual men and women have an increased risk of mental health problems compared to heterosexual men and women. Islamic men and women in the Netherlands also have an increased risk of mental health problems compared to the non-Islamic indigenous Dutch population. These differences in mental health can be explained by the Minority Stress Model. According to this model, pertaining to both the minority groups will lead to even more increased mental health problems. However, hardly any contemporary scientific research is conducted into mental health problems of homosexual Islamic men and women. In this study, the survey population consists of a group of homosexual Dutch men and women (N=91), a group of heterosexual Dutch men and women (N=89), a group heterosexual of Islamic men and women (N=28) and a group of homosexual Islamic men and women (N=46). Anxiety and depression factors, measured by the ZBV and CES-D, were picked as indicators of mental health problems. The indigenous homosexual group did not differ significantly from the indigenous heterosexual group with regard to anxiety and depression. The Islamic group reported significantly more symptoms of anxiety and depression than the Dutch group. The Islamic homosexual group also differed significantly from the indigenous heterosexual group with regard to anxiety and depression, but this difference can be attributed completely to the factor 'Islamic'. Finally, the limitations of this study, recommendations for future research and clinical implications are discussed.
